1. Where do I start if i want to become a model?
The first thing you need to do when you decide you want to be a model is to have a portfolio made. This portfolio will contain your pictures and these are what will sell you to several modeling agencies until you get one that signs you up. Remember that a professional should do your pictures so as to get the best results. You portfolio is your Resume and for that reason it should be attractive and kept clean.
2. What if I cannot afford professional photos?
Always keep in mind that professional pictures are best. If you cannot afford this, you should recruit one of your friends to take pictures of you. The pictures should be taken in front of a blank background so as not to divert any attention from you as the subject. Peruse numerous fashion magazines and take note of how the models pose. You do not have to copy the poses exactly as this could come out looking plastic; instead, you should use them as a guide on how to better your own technique. Ensure that you are using a camera with a high resolution of megapixels. This will increase the quality of the pictures that you take.
3. Will I need to move from where I live?
Chances are if you make it big in the industry, you will have to move. Your Career will be more lucrative if you are based in the fashion capitals of the world. The bigger you are in your career, the more options you will have. Once you have made your name, clients will be banging at your door. They will even fly you from wherever you are to the shoot and back home. All this depends on how well you fare in the fashion industry.
4. Do I need to be a certain height and weight?
In both, the male modeling and the female modeling industries, there are height restrictions. Male models cannot be shorter than five feet and eleven inches. Female models cannot be shorter than five feet and seven inches. This is the standard for fashion modeling. If you are shorter than that, and are adamant in pursuing a modeling career, you could venture into other avenues; these include working for print media or in advertisements. Advertisements do not have strict weight and height regulations. In some instances, it also depends on the clients. Some designers may insist on only having models that are above six feet. This is under their discretion because at the end of the day, it is their product that they are trying to sell. With all this, you should keep in mind that the fashion industry is moving away from the classically thin models. This is to curb the prevalence of eating disorders in the industry. The pressures to maintain a certain body weight may be too much for some aspiring models. To deter them, fashion houses stay away from working with those with known eating disorders.
